If you haven’t seen or heard about Terence Crutcher, 40 years old, being shot and killed by Tulsa Police Officer Betty Shelby then where have you been?
Below is the video of what happen.
My first knee-jerk reaction to the video is Mr. Crutcher ignoring Officer Shelby’s request for him to freeze/stop. Instead, Mr. Crutcher persists on walking towards his vehicle, with his hands raised.
Now we have four officers standing down with Mr. Crutcher as he is reaching for something with his hands. It’s very difficult to tell but you can hear the officers from the helicopter’s commentary. Granted questionable but still a professional opinion of the situation.
Now on the ground I’m curious to know, in the heat of the moment, did Officer Shelby know she had her gun drawn? In the heat of the moment, something you are trained for, did you forget you drew your weapon? I’m curious because after the officers in the helicopter called for him to be tased, Mr. Crutcher was tased and simultaneously shot.
Obviously, the call was made on the ground to engage but what made her think she could shoot? The only logically thing I can think of is she was under the impression she had drawn her taser. Short of that, what’s the excuse?
I don’t want to believe that she was a racist cop that had no regard for a random black man’s life. I can not wrap my mind around that concept. Let alone I/we do not know enough about Officer Shelby, yet.
A warrant was issued for Shelby’s arrest and early Friday, Sept 23, 2016, she was booked into a Tulsa County jail and released on $50,000 bond, according to court documents.
